Shawn Levy May Direct ‘Romancing the Stone’ But As A Television Show

Last week, a relic was dug up in the form of word spreading that the remake of the 1984 adventure film, ‘Romancing the Stone’ was moving forward after having been at a stand-still for a few years. It was said that 20th Century Fox was looking for a new director who could provide a “fresh, exciting take” with their adaptation. Names being considered for the lead roles were said to be Katherine Heigl, Taylor Kitsch, and Gerard Butler.

Deadline reports that for now anyway, a theatrical remake is out of the question. NBC is tweaking the formula of the original film, and making it into a television series. Whereas the original starred Kathleen Turner as a novelist who embarks on a quest with the help of a solider of fortune played by Michael Douglas to save her kidnapped sister, the television show has a “successful but unfulfilled woman” going on adventures with a “risk-taking” individual while searching for her lost brother.

Creator, writer, and producer of the television series, ‘The Forgotten,’ Mark Friedman is writing the script for the adaptation of ‘Romancing the Stone.’ Schedule permitting, director Shawn Levy could be at the helm of the series. He has long been said to be attached to the ‘Fantastic Voyage’ remake, and more recently, his name came up in regards to 20th Century Fox’s ‘Frankenstein.’ Not too long from now on October 7, Levy’s robot boxing film with Hugh Jackman in the lead, ‘Real Steel’ hits theaters.

What do you think, is it better that ‘Romancing the Stone’ become a television series, or is it just a cop out from the theatrical remake it deserves?

‘The Avengers’ Wraps In Cleveland; New Set Video And Promo Art

So ends another spoiler laden round of shooting for a superhero film. Cleveland.com has posted their farewell to the Marvel superhero mash-up, ‘The Avengers,’ which occupied the city for much of August. During its time there, the production turned Cleveland into the more bustling New York City, as well as Stuttgart, Germany.

The most exciting stuff to come out of the set involved Captain America (Chris Evans) and Thor (Chris Hemsworth) taking on the Mocap Men, who were standing in for the Skrulls; one of the villains, Loki (Tom Hiddleston) instilling some fear; and a disassembled Iron Man. (Robert Downey Jr.)

To go along with all of the previous excitement, there is a video below that is sure to kill your buzz a bit. It’s of the last day of shooting which was on a tight schedule to get the climactic crushing of the hotdog stand finished. Also, from Spider Media, there is some promotional artwork for the film posted below. It shows this iteration of the Avengers striking their best pose. There’s more on the website, but it all looks incredibly familiar. If some of the drawn-up stuff for the film has eluded you, it’s worth taking a look at.

Along with the above aforementioned, the cast of the film includes Mark Ruffalo as Bruce Banner, Jeremy Renner as Hawkeye, Scarlett Johansson as Black Widow, Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury, Cobie Smulders as Maria Hill, and Clark Gregg as Agent Phil Coulson.

From director Joss Whedon, ‘The Avengers’ assemble in theaters early next summer on May 4, 2012.

Don Cheadle As A Foul-Mouthed ‘Captain Planet’

Believe it or not, a theatrical adaptation of the 1990s eco-friendly cartoon, ‘Captain Planet and the Planeteers’ is in the works. A show with an obvious agenda of spreading awareness of the damage humans do to the earth on a daily basis, it was created by Ted Turner, and ran for six seasons.

For those whose nostalgia hasn’t kicked in yet, or for those who have no idea who Captain Planet is in the first place, here’s a synopsis of the show provided by IMDB:

"Seeing the Earth in its profound environmental peril, Gaia, goddess of the Earth, summons five kids from around the world to become the Planeteers, an opposing force to fight back and educate others in the need to be environmentally responsible. To accomplish that task, each kid is given a magic ring that each has a power of earth, wind, water, fire and heart. When the threat they face is too big for them to face, they can combine and amplify their powers to create Captain Planet, who has the power to stop catastrophic environmental disasters himself, while the Planeteers contribute with the things anyone can and should do to help."

With the way the world, or more specifically North America is right now with everyone pushing "green" living, a theatrical ‘Captain Planet’ could prove to be a success if the tone is right.

Actor Don Cheadle put together a short parody based on the series, which has been posted on Funny or Die, and can be viewed below. In it, he plays a rogue Captain Planet who identifies far more with nature than he does humans. Check it out and let the fear build for the upcoming adaptation.
