Watch: Trailer For DC’s SUPERMAN: UNBOUND

Superman: Unbound

Nerdist debuted the new trailer for DC’s next animated feature, Superman: Unbound, inspired by Geoff Johns and Gary Frank‘s 2008 Action Comics storyline ‘Brainiac.’ This feature will be released in June as part of a promotion for the theatrical release of The Man of Steel.

Featuring the voice talents of White Collar‘s Matt Bomer (as Supes), Fringe‘s John Noble (Brainiac), Castle‘s Stana Katic (Lois Lane), and Molly Quinn (Kara Zor-El, a.k.a. Supergirl), the animated flick will likely feature more action than all of the Superman movies combined thus far.

Unbound focuses on Superman preparing for a showdown with the metal monster Brainiac as he has his sights set on Earth for harvesting.

On the other side, Kara, Clark Kent’s cousin, who has seen the devastation Brainiac can cause when he miniaturized and bottled the Kryptonian capital of Kandor.

Check out the new trailer for Superman: Unbound below, despite the trailer does not seem to include Clark and Pa Kent sharing a moment over some refreshing bottles of root beer.

Liv Ullman’s MISS JULIE Adds Jessica Chastain, Colin Farrell & Samantha Morton

Chastain-Farrell

After Swedish filmmaker Alf Sjoberg’s visually innovative, Cannes Grand Prix-winning adaptation released in 1951, Ingmar Bergman’s muse Liv Ullmann will next direct an adaptation of August Strindberg‘s battle-of-the-sexes play Miss Julie that will star Jessica Chastain and Colin Farrell.

Samantha Morton (Minority Report) is on board to co-star.

Strindberg’s renowned 1888 play Miss Julie vividly depicts the battle of the sexes and classes that ensues when a wealthy businessman’s daughter falls for her father’s bitter servant.

Chastain, who is up for an Academy Award for the role in Zero Dark Thirty can be currently seen in the successful horror film Mama.

The Irish Film Board has announced Farrell’s nomination for a Best Actor award for his role in Seven Psychopaths. Irish superstar is currently filming A Winter’s Tale for Warner Bros. and his other upcoming projects include Saving Mr. Banks and Dead Man Down with Noomi Rapace.

Liv Ullmann

The last feature the multihyphenate Ullmann directed was 2000s Swedish film Faithless. She has been recently directing Cate Blanchett and Joel Edgerton onstage in ‘A Streetcar Named Desire’.

Charlize Theron Eyes A MILLION WAYS TO DIE IN THE WEST by Seth MacFarlane

Charlize Theron

Family Guy and Ted creator Seth Macfarlane sure is busy lately – he is hosting this year’s 85th Annual Academy Awards ceremony in a few weeks and reuniting with Ted stars Mark Wahlberg and Mila Kunis on a sequel to his successful feature directorial debut later this year.

However, in between those ventures – and obligations to his animated TV comedy series Family Guy, American Dad! and The Cleveland Show – MacFarlane will be directing and starring in his sophomore theatrical effort, A Million Ways to Die in the West. It appears that Charlize Theron is currently in final negotiations.

MacFarlane is directing A Million Ways… from a screenplay he co-wrote with Alec Sulkin and Wellesley Wild, having previously collaborated on the Ted script and worked alongside each other as voice actors, writer and co-showrunners on Family Guy. Heat Vision summarized the plot like this:

['A Million Ways...'] follows a sheepish farmer who chickens out of a gunfight and sees his girlfriend leave him. When he meets the wife of a notorious outlaw who offers to teach him how to shoot, the farmer at first sees a chance to win back his love but slowly falls for the woman. Complications ensue when the outlaw returns and reclaims his woman.

Seth MacFarlane

The reports don’t specify for which role Theron is bidding, but it’s safe to conclude that she’s playing the “wife of a notorious outlaw” role. It’s a welcome change of pace for the gorgeous Oscar-winner, whose comedy work over the past decade has fallen on the bitingly-dark and satirical side (Hancock, Young Adult), as opposed to the sort of button-pushing dialogues and scenes MacFarlane is known for.

Unfortunately, this could mean she’s passing on P.T. Anderson’s Inherent Vice, as the respective projects are preparing to begin shooting around the same time this spring.

A Million Ways to Die in the West is already being compared with Mel Brooks’ western parody, Blazing Saddles, as MacFarlane’s film is likewise expected to spoof and deconstruct the genre’s conventions for comedic effect (while examining their implications from a modern social perspective). Brooks’ fondness for those old western tropes allowed Blazing Saddles to remain a cherished comedy title, much like MacFarlane’s good-natured feelings about contemporary man-boy mentality make Ted funny and touching entertainment for many people (and his sharp critique and mockery – which is what I love most about his work – obviously also find their way to offending some).

Knowing all that, I can honestly say that I can’t wait to see this piece!

A Million Ways to Die in the West begins filming in May, with expectance to reach theaters by summer 2014.

Duncan Jones To Direct WARCRAFT Live-Action Film

Warcraft

The live-action Warcraft movie was in development for quite some time with Sam Raimi tapped to direct since 2009. The film based on the ultra-popular online role-playing game ‘ World of Warcraft’ looked like it was dead in the water last summer when  Raimi departed for Oz the Great and Powerful.

Legendary Pictures then brought screenwriter Charles Leavitt to provide a rewrite on the script which was initially penned by Robert Rodat (Saving Private Ryan) . Now comes word that son of none other than David Bowie, Duncan Jones (Source Code) has been tapped to take the helm for a planned fall 2013 production start.

Furthermore, online rumors linking Johnny Depp to star in upcoming Jones‘ Warcraft movie. Take it with a grain of salt for now.

Jon Jashni, Thomas Tull, Charles Roven, Alex Gartner and Josh Donen will produce outfit, eyeing a 2015 release.

The script is being kept under wraps.

Jones, who made his feature debut writing and directing 2009s Moon and followed that up with Source Code, commented on Twitter:

So the gauntlet was thrown down ages ago: Can you make a proper MOVIE of a video game. I’ve always said it’s possible. Got to DO it now! ;)

Jones is very much a gamer and he is one hell of a filmmaker, so getting him onboard is a great start for Warcraft.
