Cousins Kajol-Rani’s Stunning Cover Comebacks

After what seems like ages, two of Bollywood’s most iconic ladies are back, gracing the covers of two of the most followed magazines of our times. Kajol and Rani Mukerji, the true-blue timeless beauties have made individual cover comeback and we’re loving every bit of it!

Kajol who seems to be getting better with age (so much hotter!) has graced the cover of Elle India for its August issue. Dressed in a beautiful orange and purple trench coat (from Namrata Joshipura’s Fall 2015 collection), the lady is looking absolutely breathtaking. See that bracelet? It’s Dior (woah!).

image1 (2)

Does Kajol even look anywhere close to 40? How are you doing that, girl!? Although Kajol has been on many, many magazine covers, we’ve never seen her look this awesome. Her trademark unibrow is gone and we’re totally digging the dark lips.

image2 (2)

All set to make her comeback with Rohit Shetty’s Dilwale (opposite Shah Rukh Khan), the dusky beauty is as graceful as ever.

image3 (2)

Don’t get too busy looking at Kajol because her cousin is right up there when it comes to hotness.

Rani is on the cover of Vogue for the August issue and we’ve NEVER seen her look this splendid. The 37-year-old was recently conferred with the Timeless Beauty title at the Vogue Beauty Awards 2015 and we can totally see why!

image1 (2)

For the cover, Rani has donned a floral Dolce & Gabbana summer dress and paired it with a pretty green cardigan. Dark lips, intense eyes and hair swept to the side *phew*. Is it just us or is it getting hot in here?

image4 (2)

Mrs. Aditya Chopra has gone super candid in her Vogue interview, we’ve heard. Can’t wait to read it all.

We’re finding it really difficult to pick our favourite cover. Please don’t ask us to choose! We love ‘em both.

Will Drishyam Be A Hit, Like Other South Remakes?

The release of Drishyam (which is getting good reviews, by the way) has once again gotten everyone talking about Bollywood’s Tollywood (Kollywood?) connection. Remaking South Indian blockbusters is now a trend in Bollywood. Had Bahubali not been released in Hindi, we would’ve already heard of a remake (possibly featuring Salman Khan) to be released sometime next year.

While most South Indian remakes work, some don’t, so it’s basically just a hit-and-miss. Let’s take a look at the times when filmmakers got it right and South remakes worked really well.

2009 – Wanted

Salman Khan’s comeback film that broke box office records, Wanted was a remake of Mahesh Babu and Ileana D’Cruz starrer Pokiri. Directed by Prabhu Deva, the film elevated Salman’s status to that of a megastar and the actor hasn’t looked back since.

image1 (2)

2011 – Ready

Another Salman starrer and again a remake of Ram’s Telugu hit of the same name. Ready, upon its release, became the year’s second highest opening day grosser.

image2 (2)

2008 – Ghajini

A blockbuster of epic proportions, Ghajini showcased a side of Aamir Khan that we had never seen before. The Hindi film was a remake of the South Indian psychological thriller, Ghajini directed by AR Murugadoss of Holiday fame.

2011 – Singham

Rohit Shetty’s Ajay Devgn starrer was a remake of the Tamil hit Singham. The original starrer South superstar Suriya. The Hindi version even got a sequel (such popularity!).

image5 (2)

2011 – Bodyguard

Salman Khan (do we see a pattern here?) played the titular role in this remake of a Malayalam film of same name. Both versions were directed by Siddique and did really well at the box-office.

Bollywood’s Smash Hits In Pakistan

Recent reports have suggested that Salman Khan’s emotional saga Bajrangi Bhaijaan is being showered with much love in Pakistan. Remember how audiences here were leaving theatres all teary eyed after a BB watch (Aamir Khan included)? The same is apparently happening in the neighbouring country too. Now that’s some feat!

8 Popular Bollywood Films That Worked in Pakistan

While it is true that Bollywood movies are by-and-large banned in Pakistan, there have been films that have seen success and received appreciation from across the border.

Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge

8 Popular Bollywood Films That Worked in Pakistan

We’ve been watching Raj and Simran since 1995, but Pakistan has only recently fallen in love with them. Cinephiles there might have experienced the DDLJ magic after much delay but they have been moved just as much by Simran and Raj’s struggles and Babu ji’s “Jaa Simran, jee le apni zindagi“.

8 Popular Bollywood Films That Worked in Pakistan

When it comes to Bhai and his fandom, no borders exist. Ek Tha Tiger was banned in Pakistan (and we hear that many were unhappy about it) but when Dabangg hit the theatres, it was loved, lauded, applauded, appreciated and everything in-between.

3 Idiots

8 Popular Bollywood Films That Worked in Pakistan

This masterpiece by Rajkumar Hirani was so much fun that no one could say “no” to it. The audience loved it, of course, but we’re sure that even the super-serious and traditional members of the Pakistani censor board would’ve smiled when watching 3 Idiots.

8 Popular Bollywood Films That Worked in Pakistan

Cinema-goers in Pakistan had to wait a long, long time for Sholay, till 2015 to be specific (!). All the adulation and packed cinema halls made it all worth it though.

Released alongside DDLJ, Devdas got an amazing response in Pak. It was loved by everyone and got the cash registers ringing like crazy. Both Madhuri Dixit and Shah Rukh Khan have a huge fan-following in the country so that might have something to do with it (apart from the fact that Devdas is an awesome film!).

Not only was this SRK starrer a mega-hit in Pakistan, it broke quite a few records of Bollywood movies previously released in the country.

Kismat Konnection

Surprised? Shocked? Honestly, we were too. KK tanked real bad in India but it did well in Pakistan. Was it Atif Aslam’s songs? Shahid Kapoor dance? Vidya Balan’s good-looks? We don’t know. What do you think?

Education, learning and compassion have no borders, right? TZP proved that by becoming a blockbuster in Pakistan. Who wouldn’t fall in love with the adorable Ishaan Awasthi and his Ram Sir?

Happy Birthday, Mumtaz

When Mere Sanam became an unexpected box-office success in 1965, most people were talking about a “new girl” who was swaying seductively to Ye Hai Reshmi Zulfon Ka Andhera. This girl wasn’t exactly new though. She had played some minor roles in A-grade films but it was this vintage item number that got her noticed. This girl was Mumtaz, who later went on to become one of the most successful and sought-after actresses of the 1960s and 70s.

Once super popular, this versatile actress has today become next to unknown. On Mumtaz’s birthday today, we at BC will do our bit to try and make her mainstream again by pointing out why the generation of today (and all generations to come) should know about this lady.

She was Bollywood’s Original Trendsetter

Onscreen fashion for actresses back in the 60s was pretty standard – colourful saris, big joodas, glittery jewellery and tons of make-up. With Mumtaz, trends started to change (for the better!).

Does this sari style look familiar?

image1 (2)

Thanks to Mumtaz, this became a rage that still hasn’t died down.

She let her hair down, quite literally

image2 (2)

And started going light on make-up. In fact, she was among the first Bollywood actresses to focus all her attention on eye make-up and kept everything else minimal

image3 (2)

Including jewellery

She was A Feminist Before it was Cool

Yes, Mumtaz was (is) a feminist, and a true feminist at that. She didn’t march with slogans or make controversial statements but it was always clear that in her life, she called the shots.

image8 (1)

She decided to give up on the love of her life (Shammi Kapoor) because she did not want to stop working (that’s how much she loved being independent)

image5 (2)

And she acted in what can easily be called one of Bollywood’s earliest female-centric films. We’re talking about Aaina, which was later remade as Laga Chunari Mein Daag with Rani Mukerji in the lead role.

image7 (1)

She Experimented and Loved Challenges

Essential “leading lady” roles in the 60s and 70s Bollywood were pretty standard. Mumtaz was one of the first actresses to challenge that and opt for roles that portrayed her as more than just a standard PYT.

Most mainstream actresses wouldn’t touch a grey character with a 10-foot pole, but Mumtaz was no ordinary actress. She played semi-negative characters with absolute grace and panache, like she did in Mere Sanam

Loafer (opposite Dharmendra)

And Brahmachari

Khilona, arguably Mumtaz’s best film, saw her play a multi-dimensional character that was extremely complex. She took home a very well-deserved Filmfare Best Actress Award that year. If you ever (ever!) doubt the genius of Mumtaz, just watch Khilona.

She was Unapologetic About Her Choices

Whenever Mumtaz spoke to the media, one thing that shone through was her confidence and absolute belief in whatever she was doing. Whether it was her decision to don a bikini when her contemporaries where sari-clad

Or her decision to play a bidi-smoking, loud-mouth, tomboy

Mumtaz stood by her choices.

She was open about her relationships, well relationship, and never shied away from being candid about her co-stars.

image4 (2)

It is no secret that almost all leading men of those days wanted to marry Mumtaz (we’re talking big stars like Dharmendra and Jeetendra) but the lady decided to marry outside of the film fraternity. Were there problems in her marriage? Lots! Did she ever step back or express regret? Not for a second!

Kudos to Mumtaz for being a true heroine, not just an actress.

Katrina Kaif And Belly Dancers: Another Chikni Chameli?

The first song from Phantom has been released. Going by the title of the song, one would expect it to be an item number. The actress is walking around in full style in Afghan Jalebi, surrounded by armed Afghans and belly dancers.

Ajay Devgn’s Candid Talk

As Ajay Devgn prepares for the release of Drishyam, the actor is getting pretty candid and is speaking his mind without any reservations. Considering that Ajay almost never talks (especially in a tell-all way), this is kind of a big deal.

During a recent interview, Ajay was asked about his thoughts on Shivaay clashing with Karan Johar’s Ae Dil Hai Mushkil at the box office next year. Starring Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Ranbir Kapoor and Anushka Sharma, Ae Dil Hai Mushkil is one of 2016’s most talked about and awaited releases. The actor made it very clear that he is “not afraid” of clashes. In fact, he “loves” such occasions because they motivate him to work harder.

image4 (2)

“We are all friends. We all have our own zone and space where we feel comfortable working in. Ultimately, there has been so much of work in the industry and I’ve been working in it for almost 25 years now. So, we don’t cross each other’s space”, Ajay said. Yup, he made things pretty clear.

Ajay thinks that “it’s a fair call” when some films clash and it is bound to happen. At the end of the day, he believes that films that have a good script will work no matter what. “I’m not afraid of it”, he doesn’t fail to assert.

image5 (2)

We are now waiting for Nishikant Kamat’s Drishyam to release, which promises to be a mind-blowing psychological thriller. Ajay and Tabu are all set to deliver electrifying performances and we can’t wait to watch them!

Kareena-Arjun As Ki And Ka

image1 (2)

R. Balki’s next starring Kareena Kapoor and Arjun Kapoor is titled Ki And Ka (as recently revealed on Twitter). Confused about the title? We were too, till Balki clarified it. “Hindi is a language where just not human beings, even objects have genders. The film is all about the fact that ‘Ki and Ka’ genders don’t matter”, he said. So, a film about gender equality then, we’re guessing.

A very excited Arjun tweeted about his upcoming venture:

Kareena’s first look pictures from the film were recently shared on Twitter. These very candid, black and white pictures that don’t reveal much about the film, Bebo or her character. It does look very interesting though.

image1 (3)

image2 (2)

image3 (2)

Ki And Ka, we’ve heard, is all about breaking gender stereotypes. While Kareena plays a corporate honcho in the film, Arjun is a stay-at-home husband who supports his wife’s career and aspiration. Not something we see everyday, eh?

This is the first time that Kareena and Arjun will be seen together in a film, and this is the first time that Arjun is playing a non-stereotypical character. Buzz is that Ki And Ka will see a cameo by Amitabh Bachchan (woah!).

Happy Birthday Sonu Sood

Happy New Year star Sonu Sood turns 42 today. The engineer-turn-actor has a strong presence in Tollywood and Kollywood and is on his way to make a similar impact in Bollywood. (Almost there, we-say). Though known for his chiseled physique Sonu is a versatile actor, having essayed different roles on screen – from hero and villain to comic foil. He’s definitely a talent to watch out for. Here are eight times when he proved his mettle.

The Bhaiyya From UP

Topping it all, it has to be Cheddi Singh from Dabangg. That physique along with the UP accent was bang on.

Royal And Brave Brother

Playing Jodhaa’s (Aishwarya Rai) brother in Jodhaa-Akbar who is fighting for his land and kingdom wasn’t easy. Reason? He had Hrithik Roshan – no less – to contend with.

No Cop Out

In Buddah Hoga Tera Baap, he played Hema Malini and Amitabh Bachchan’s son – a cop who swears to eliminate crime from his city. (We also loved the madly-in-love side of Sonu).

The Perfect Romeo

Here, he wasn’t fighting in the battles or dying in the process. Sonu was at his charming best in Ek Vivah Aisa Bhi. Who would have thought that this man has such a soft and romantic side to him?

Mute Yet Funny

The king in Singh Is King was a funny one. Using every single muscle on his face, Sonu conveyed all expressions and feelings quite well.

R Rajkumar

A villain that makes you smile and blush. How is that even possible? Well ask, Shivraj from R..Rajkumar.

download (2)

Happy New Year

Playing Jag in Happy New Year, where he lost his cool every time anyone said anything about his mother, was super easy for Sonu. All he had to do was show off his muscles – and be funny. All of which comes naturally to our birthday boy.

download (3)

AB’s Bro

A special mention for his performance in Yuva as Abhishek Bachchan’s brother. After all, this was the beginning.
